MUSIS

MUSIS (Multinational Space-based Imaging System) is a European military program aimed at collaboration on the next generation of satellite reconnaissance systems.  At the moment, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Greece are operating or developing separate satellite reconnaissance systems such as HELIOS II, SAR-Lupe, COSMO-SkyMed and Pleiades.

MUSIS seeks to ensure that the capacities of future space-based reconnaissance system can be jointly used by the aforementioned nations. At the same time, core components such as the satellites will continue to be operated nationally. System integration will be achieved by means of jointly defined interfaces and shared ground segment elements. The purpose is for users of all participating nations to be able to

  • access all relevant space segments in accordance with their share and possibly also initiate joint projects, and
  • process all reconnaissance data derived from the space segments and the data held in the national archives.

OHB has been a member of the multinational core team lead-managing this development for all studies awarded to industrial partners. Phase A of the program has been successfully completed, with Phase B to commence before the end of 2009. The program has been structured in such a way that operations can commence in 2015.
