GMES Sentinel 1
Within the
European earth observation program GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and
Security), OHB-System is responsible for the mission analysis and the
optimization of the instrument operations for the first satellite (Sentinel-1).
For this purpose, OHB-System is leveraging its skills in mission planning and
the optimization of the operations planning for the Sentinel-1 satellites
during the current development phase up until the launch and commencement of
satellite operations.
The Sentinel-1 satellites have a C-band radar payload and constitute the
follow-up system to the European ERS and Envisat research satellites. The
principal contractor for the mission is Rome-based Thalia-Alenia-Space. The
purpose of the Sentinel-1 mission is to provide full observation capabilities
of global land masses, pack ice regions and main shipping channels at least
once every twelve days (one satellite) or once every six days (two satellites).
The challenge in optimizing operations is to achieve full coverage of the
target regions with only a 25% instrument operation period.
