Fifth Ariane 5 launch in 2009 successful
Core technology for the German Federal Armed Forces’ communications satellites supplied by OHB
Last night at 23.59 hours CEST, an Ariane 5 lifted off from the European launch pad in Kourou, French-Guyana. This marks the fifth successful Ariane-5 launch this year and the 33rd one in a row since 2003. Two further launches are scheduled for this year.
On board the rocket were two satellites including the "COMSATBw-1" communications satellite for the German Federal Armed Forces' first satellite-based communications system known as "Stage 2 SATCOMBw". A second satellite is to be launched in 2010, with the overall system to be ready for operation by the end of that year. Both satellites were developed and integrated by Thales Alenia Space for Astrium GmbH, which is supplying the entire space segment.
OHB-System is also participating in the program and is responsible for the on-board security box (OSB), a core part of the satellite technology. The OSB is the central encryption unit designed to protect the satellite from unauthorized access. This is one of OHB-System's core skills and has been already successfully implemented in a similar form in the German Federal Armed Forces' five SAR-Lupe satellites.
