Long-term agreement on satellite testing signed by OHB System and IABG

OHB System AG, a member of the European space and technology group OHB AG (Prime Standard, ISIN: DE0005936124), has signed a long-term contract with Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (IABG) in Ottobrunn for environmental testing of satellites.

“With this strategic agreement, OHB System will be the preferred customer of the space center operated by IABG over the next five years. In this way, we will be securing short-term and flexible availability of the testing facilities in Ottobrunn which are crucial for the successful continuation of our projects,” explained Frank Negretti, the member of OHB System’s management board responsible for telecommunications.

“Over the last few years, we have executed various demanding projects together with OHB System AG,” says Matthias Spott, managing director of IABG. “With the agreement that we have now signed, we are converting these joint activities into a long-term strategic partnership.”

All space systems must undergo environmental testing before being cleared for launching. During these test campaigns, the satellite is placed in a thermal vacuum chamber, where its functions are tested under space conditions in both heat and cold and in vacuums. Further functional testing entails the simulation of mechanical and also electro-magnetic strain on the satellite. IABG offers facilities and capabilities for the comprehensive qualification of space systems unique in Germany.

The agreement primarily covers OHB telecommunications satellite projects. The “Hispasat Advanced Generation 1“ (HAG1) will be the first telecommunications satellite to undergo testing under this new agreement. Based on the SmallGEO geostationary satellite platform developed by OHB for ESA, the satellite is currently being built by OHB System in Bremen for the Spanish satellite operator HISPASAT.
